There are daydreamers.
And there are go-getters.
Go-getters decide once, then train daily.
They know it's the doing not the dreaming what will get them fluent.
Must-know uses of Get
N.B: all expressions with get are in blue and are linked to a dictionary definition with further examples.
Watch the video and train with me. Repeat with me out loud while visualising the logical set of actions expressed with get.
Once you get into The World of Get (enter), nothing will feel the same anymore. You will get natives more easily (understand). You will speak English more naturally. You will get to experience the language like a native (have the chance to).
1. Getting to the office
In the morning I get up at 7am, I get dressed, I get my computer (take) and leave for the office. I walk to the tube station, get on the tube at about 8.30am (to board public transport) and get off at around 8.50am (leave public transport). As soon as I get out of the station (exit a place), on my way to the office, I always get a coffee (take), so that when I get to the office (arrive) I can get down to work immediately.
2. A day in the office
First thing in the morning, before I start getting any calls (receiving), I go through my email and get back to colleagues and clients regarding the most important issues (reply by email or phone call). That way I get rid of anything that might distract me later on.
Then I make a list with the top 3 priorities I have to get through by the end of the day (complete). I usually get someone on my team to help me with assessments and report writing (ask them to help me).
If I do not get around to doing everything (find the time) by 6pm I stay till 6.30pm but no longer than that. I get on with the rest of the things the day after.
3. Beyond work
There are a few colleagues I get along with and when we manage to get away from work earlier we get together, get a pizza and spend the evening together. We help each other out when we get behind with work and get stressed out (become). It's easier to get over nasty situations at work when someone has your back.
To activate and use these expressions spontaneously:
write them on post-it notes
stick the post-it notes around your house
and whenever you pass by pick one expression with get
use Youglish to get more examples (obtain) and repeat them aloud
then come up with your own examples and say them aloud using
different tenses (past, present, future, conditional)
different forms (positive and negative statement, question)
Last, but not least, make a habit out of identifying real-life situations where you could use get.
